
White Elephant Sale -- Northern California’s biggest and best rummage sale returns on Saturday,March 3 and Sunday, March 4, 2012. Admission is free. Organized and presented by the Oakland Museum Women’s Board to benefit the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), the annual Sale is now in its 53rd year. Co-chairs for 2012 are Dena Canty and Lisa Lenahan.
A Bay Area tradition, the White Elephant Sale packs bargains galore into a vast 96,000 square-foot warehouse located at 333 Lancaster Street, on the Oakland estuary. On Sale days, a free shuttle provides transportation to and from the Fruitvale BART station and the warehouse. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. Strollers, shopping carts, backpacks and large bags are not permitted in the warehouse.
Preview Sale
Shoppers eagerly anticipate their first opportunity to see and buy the new, the unusual and the unexpected at the White Elephant Preview Sale on Sunday, January 29, 2012. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 at www.WhiteElephantSale.org. Tickets are $20 the day of the sale. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 333 Lancaster Street warehouse site. Children under 12 years of age are admitted free but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Donations from the public make the White Elephant Sale possible, with gently used, good quality items always appreciated. To donate, call 510-839-5919 to schedule the van for a free pickup or visit the website at www.WhiteElephantSale.org for a list of public drop-off days at the 333 Lancaster Street warehouse site. Also on the website is a list of items that regrettably the White Elephant cannot accept.
The Oakland Museum Women’s Board
Founded in 1955, The Oakland Museum Women’s Board has been providing services and funds to the Oakland Museum of California for over 50 years, contributing more than $16 million to support OMCA acquisitions, exhibitions, educational programs and capital improvements. A non-profit organization, its only fundraising activity is the annual White Elephant Sale, which in 2011 raised an unprecedented $1.6 million.
Consisting of 100 Active members, the all-volunteer Women’s Board also includes Associate, Life and Emeritus members. Sheri Guthrie is the 2011/2012 President.
Volunteers
The White Elephant Sale attracts a corps of more than 1,000 volunteers from around the Bay Area, including Museum staff and hundreds of relatives, friends and neighbors. The success of the Sale can be directly attributed to the dedication and commitment of its volunteers.
