51st White Elephant Sale Hits All Time High
Annual Rummage Sale Raises $1.4 Million for Oakland Museum of CA

In spite of the current economy, the annual sale, held the first weekend of each March was a huge success. The sale Co-Chairs, Carolyn Higgins and Roxana Larsen, announced the results on March 17th at a celebration attended by over 250 volunteers and Museum staff at the WES Warehouse.

What began in 1959 as a minor, but well organized Rummage Sale by the Oakland Museum Women’s Board, has become a well-established fundraiser. The purpose of this non-profit organization is to improve and extend the Oakland Museum of California.

Proceeds from the sale support the Oakland Museum's educational programs, collections, exhibitions, acquisitions, collection facilities, display facilities, galleries, special events, and collections preservation.

Over the past 50 years the Women’s Board has contributed more than $15 million to the museum.

In addition to the March Sale, the annual Preview Sale in late January, is also open to the public. There is only an admission charge for the Preview Sale and this year’s Preview Sale was held on January 31st. It grossed nearly $85K more than the previous year.

Hundreds of volunteers participate in this year-round endeavor. They include, Women’s Board members, family, friends, neighbors, Museum staff and even a few volunteers from other states who come periodically throughout the year!

Donations are accepted throughout the year, and the WES Van is already being scheduled for pickups.
