Wes 2021 do not take list final

Why we have a Do Not Take List

The White Elephant Sale is a success due to the generosity of our donors, the organizational effort of the Oakland Museum Women’s Board (comprised of nearly 100 members) and diligent work of over 900 volunteers. To make our 2021 Sale one of the best ever, we must streamline our operation.

Please donate only items in ready-to-sell condition. Many items we receive are broken or damaged beyond repair and must be discarded. In 2020, we spent more than $10,000 sending unusable items to landfill. When possible, we redistribute usable but unsaleable donations to over 100 charities.

Please review our complete DO NOT TAKE LIST to ensure that you only donate things you yourself would buy if you wanted or needed them. Help us make our offerings irresistible when our on-line store opens in mid-2021!

COVID HAS IMPACTED OUR DO NOT TAKE LIST

For 2021, our list has been revised and is considerably longer than previous years.  To ensure the safety of our volunteers, we need to reduce the volume of donations we receive to create effective distancing and a safe working environment in the warehouse.

We do not take any items that are:

  • Broken, damaged, stained, or needing repair
  • Items with corporate logos (e.g. office supplies, mugs, clothing,), except we do take college and professional sports team items
  • Personalized with names/initials (e.g. linens, towels, mugs, etc.) – except we do take personalized silver or silver plate items
  • Chemicals and/or flammable fluids
  • Perishable or personal care items (e.g. food, wine, pharmacy, lotions, soaps, or other personal care items)

For our complete new Do Not Take list, click the link below.

Our van drivers may refuse to take certain items when they come to pick up your donation. Please respect their authority in making these decisions. They have many years of experience working for the White Elephant Sale.

Thank you for supporting the Oakland Museum of California!
